Wedgewood Pharmacy earns Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board’s (PCAB®) Seal of Accreditation

Wedgewood Pharmacy has earned the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board’s (PCAB®) Seal of Accreditation, demonstrating that the 30-year-old specialized compounding pharmacy continues to meet the highest standards of quality and safety in its profession.  Wedgewood Pharmacy is the first pharmacy in the Philadelphia area to earn PCAB Accreditation.

Formed by eight of the nation’s leading pharmacy associations, PCAB promotes, develops and maintains principles, policies and standards for improving the quality of pharmacy compounding nationwide.

George J. Malmberg, R.Ph., F.A.C.A., F.A.C.V.P., president and CEO noted, “PCAB Accreditation is another validation that we have been successful in delivering on our commitments of quality and value to prescribers, patients and caregivers.  In the past 30 years we have invested in facilities, equipment, expertise, procedures and training to assure that we consistently deliver safe, high-quality preparations.”

Compounding medications is an integral part of the practice of pharmacy and the demand for these customized medications is increasing every year.  Yet many people may not even be aware of a compounding pharmacy’s role.  Compounded medications are prescriptions written by physicians, veterinarians and other legally authorized prescribers and prepared by a specially trained pharmacist.

Compounding pharmacies play a vital role in healthcare, providing customized medications ordered by prescribers when medications aren’t available with the appropriate pharmaceutical ingredients, or require an alteration in dosage form, strength or removal of preservatives.  Compounding pharmacies also play a crucial role in addressing increasingly widespread drug shortages that are causing severe problems for the nation’s health care system and veterinary practices, by helping to continue life-saving patient therapies.

Lucy Malmberg, R.Ph., F.A.C.A., F.A.C.V.P., senior executive vice president added, “When FDA-manufactured drugs are back-ordered or removed from the market, compounding pharmacies often can provide alternative preparations that save lives.  PCAB Accreditation gives prescribers, patients, caregivers and animal owners the confidence to select a compounding pharmacy that meets high quality-standards.”

The Accreditation Process

To earn PCAB Accreditation, Wedgewood Pharmacy completed an extensive application and provided documentation of its standard operating procedures to assure that the company is practicing compounding pharmacy at high standards of quality and safety.  PCAB and leading experts in the field of compounding reviewed this information and conducted an extensive on-site inspection.  When these stringent evaluations were completed, Wedgewood Pharmacy received the PCAB Seal of Accreditation and the right to use the designation “PCAB Accredited® compounding pharmacy.”
