News and Notes: Dean W. Richardson, DVM, DACVS, head of Barbaro's medical team, is featured at Hambletonian Seminar ![]() At 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 3, Dr. Dean Richardson, head of the medical team that treated Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro, will share the Lessons Learned from the Barbaro Experience. Using photos, videos and X-rays, Dr. Richardson will discuss the value of his experience for the equine medical community and how the knowledge his team gained will help other animals. Wedgewood Pharmacy sponsors the presentation. Barbaro, who shattered his leg two weeks after The Derby at the 2006 Preakness Stakes, focused attention on the sport of racing and the profession of equine veterinary medicine. His ordeal also brought much needed funding to laminitis research; Barbaro's owners recently paid tribute to Dr. Richardson by endowing a $3 million chair in his name dedicated to the study of equine disease. Dr. Richardson has been on staff at the New Bolton Center for 28 years and currently serves as chief of surgery and Charles W. Raker professor of Equine Surgery ay New Bolton's Widener Hospital for Large Animals. He is an internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon whose research focuses on cartilage repair.
