the News:"Tears will flow from watching 'Barbaro.'" The June 6 HBO sports documentary, Barbaro, according to The New York Times, "tells the life story of a horse Hemingway would have loved, one who exhibited grace under great pressure. Like the other innocent animals we love, horses 'trust us, live alongside us, honoring our many commands,' the narrator, Liev Schreiber, says. 'And when we ask them to — they run.'" The documentary is still showing nationwide through HBO's on-demand service. Check the schedule here and see the preview here. Equine Injury-Reporting System Begins at 30 Tracks A uniform on-track equine injury system developed by Mary Scollay, DVM, associate veterinarian at Calder Race Course and Gulfstrem Park, was implemented as a pilot project at 30 racetracks on June 1. The centerpiece of the system is a standardized form that will be used by veterinarians to identify what happened to an injured horse. The horse will not be identified at any time and tracks will be able to compare their individual statistics to the aggregate data. The project was announced by the Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit. Its complete recommendations, issued in 2006, are here. A list of the tracks in the pilot is here. More Horses Having Elective Surgery Veterinarians at Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center reported that the center's five board-certified surgeons completed almost 500 elective surgeries in 2006 as compared with only 400 similar operations a decade ago, a 20 percent increase. They say it's because many non-emergency conditions can now be treated more effectively and owners are more educated about caring for their animals. Details here. Dexamethasone Powder Packets 10mg/5gm 5gm Featured Monograph: Dexamethasone Dexamethasone is a synthetic corticosteroid with approximately 25 times the anti-inflammatory potency of naturally occurring cortisol. Corticosteroids such as dexamethasone are important in normal protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism and for their role in controlling inflammation. These drugs have both strong beneficial effects and a definite potential to cause negative side effects. Dexamethasone is commonly used in both small and large animal veterinary medicine. It may be given by injection, inhalation, orally or topically. Preparations for topical use may include other active ingredients such as antibiotics, antifungals, or miticides. Read the entire monograph >> Did You Know? A single 1 mg does of Pergolide Mesylate costs less when delivered in our naturally flavored Gourmeds dosage form. This compares with the price for the same dosage delivered as a suspension. From the Capitols:

Please consider sending a letter to your Congressional delegation about the importance of compounded medications and their impact on your patients' health. Patients and Professionals for Customized Care (P2C2) has made it as simple as completing a form and one click. Click here to preserve your rights. Do you have an interesting story about the use of compounded medications in your practice? If you do, let us know! If we publish your From The Field story in an upcoming edition of this newsletter, we'll donate $100 in your name to any equine-related non-profit you designate.
