Maryland and Virginia Horses Cleared of Equine Herpes Virus
On March 19, The Maryland Department of Agriculture received the final outstanding equine herpes virus-1 (EHV-1) negative test results for a total of 62 negative tests. As a result of these negative tests all properties of interest have been fully released from hold orders, bringing the event to closure in Maryland. The last two released farms are in Carroll and Harford counties. “These negative tests bring this EHV-1 situation to official closure in Maryland as all hold orders have been lifted and there are no reported signs of the virus anywhere in the state,” said State Veterinarian Guy Hohenhaus. On March 15, Virginia's state veterinarian Dr. Richard Wilkes announced that the state's horse community can resume normal activities after the recent equine herpes outbreak there. Only four premises remain under quarantine.
New York Equine Rehabilitation Facility Planned
The Gifford Foundation of Central New York has approved a $150,000 grant to the Morrisville College Foundation (MCF) for its planned Equine Rehabilitation and Physiology facility. Morrisville State College (MSC) seeks to expand the capacity of its 302-student/400-horse operation to further the study of rehabilitation and physiology. The project will offer horse owners across New York state and the Northeast with affordable and convenient access to aquatic and hyperbaric equine rehabilitation therapies. Eventually, MSC will offer the nation's $102 billion horse industry an opportunity to employ students trained in a real-world laboratory setting, with the college's planned bachelor of science degree in equine physiology. Featured Drug Monograph
Acetyl-D-Glucosamine for Veterinary Use
Acetyl-D-Glucosamine is an amino monosaccharide. It is chemically related to glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid. These naturally occurring amino monosaccharides are found in cartilage and connective tissue. Glucosamine is commonly used to treat osteoarthritis in both humans and animals and there is an ever-increasing body of scientific evidence supporting its anti-inflammatory properties. Acetyl-D-Glucosamine has been studied in vitro to a lesser extent but it appears to have promise as a chondroprotective therapy. Read the entire monograph. >>
