Virginia Herpes Outbreak has East Coast on Edge

In late February, the Virginia Tech Marion DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg was quarantined after three horses fell ill from EHV-1 a rare, highly contagious and sometimes fatal herpes virus. The quarantine likely will last through March.

Reaction on the eastern seaboard has been swift. In Virginia and Central Maryland horse shows and competitions have been postponed or cancelled; fox hunting clubs have been asked to cease operations until the outbreak is under control. Horses that had been in Virginia and Maryland during February have been banned from Charles Town in West Virginia and Penn National in Pennsylvania, joining tracks in New York, Maryland and Delaware .

EHV-1 has two forms, one that causes abortion in mares and another that causes respiratory infection and neurological symptoms such as fever, coughing, nasal discharge, stumbling and urine retention. In severe cases, it can cause the inability to stand and death. According to Dr. Nat White, director of the Virginia Tech center, available vaccines do not fully protect against the virus.

In February, TheHorse.com reported that valacyclovir (trade name Valtrex), a drug used to prevent outbreaks of genital herpes in humans, “has a place in treating horses exposed to – and diagnosed with – equine herpes virus” and that it “appears to have been helpful in containing and treating many of the recent outbreaks of EHV-1.”

Wedgwood serves more than 17,000 prescribers of both human and veterinary preparations. As a courtesy to our veterinary prescribers, we have arranged with a distributor of human medications to make Valtrex available for use in combating equine herpes. Add $247,500 to your Practice's Annual Gross Revenue

Data collected by the National Commission of Veterinary Economic Issues (NCVEI) has shown that veterinarians are more efficient and earn significantly more money when they hire practice managers. That's because practitioners can focus more on medicine and generate more income when they're not burdened with administrative tasks. A full-time practice manager will add $247,500 to practice annual gross revenue according to this white paper, What is the Most Efficient Way for Veterinarians to Manage Their Practice? by NCVEI.
