Wedgewood Pharmacy now compounds Medetomidine HCl.

Wedgewood Pharmacy has begun to compound Medetomidine HCl 1 mg/ml Injection Solution, 10ml. Medetomidine HCl is the active ingredient that was contained in the manufactured, FDA-approved drug, Domitor®, which was discontinued by Pfizer Animal Health when that company introduced Dexdomitor® (Dexmedetomidine). 

Because Dexdomitor is on an extended manufacturer’s backorder, some veterinarians have shown an interest in prescribing Medetomidine HCl.  According to Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook, both drugs are indicated for use as a sedative and analgesic to facilitate clinical examinations, clinical procedures, minor surgical procedures, and minor dental procedures; however, they have different active ingredients and dosing guidelines.  Veterinarians may find Medetomidine HCl dosing guidance in a monograph in Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook.
